About Squats and Hops

Maybe you’re wondering who I am, or how I’m going to try and sell you on the idea that working out and enjoying a craft beer can go together. Maybe you ended up here by accident. Whichever it is, thanks for taking the time to at least read at least this much!

The about me section is farther down, but in order to tell you about the website, I need to start off by telling you a few things I love, and a few things I hate.

What I love..

I love training, I love reading about it, learning about it, and most of the time, I really enjoy doing it. Except when it comes to jogging. It’s just not my cup of tea…or beer, in this case. I enjoy the feeling of overcoming a challenge, lifting a certain weight, running a certain time, or wearing a favorite pair of pants again. I also really love helping other people do all those things. I’ve been pretty blessed to be able to do that for the last 11 years now.

I also really love beer. Not in a get drunk and can’t feel my face kind of way, but in an a appreciation for the craftsmanship and time that goes into a really good beer, and more importantly all the great times that you usually get to have when enjoying a really good beer!

Now for the things that I hate

The food you have to eat over and over and over and over and over again.

I hate thinking that in order to lose weight and get in shape, that you have to eat boring bland foods over and over again. Even worse is when you feel like you end up missing out on social events or time with your friends because “There isn’t anything I can eat there.” or “I’m only drinking a tea made of honey, pepper, and roots. It tastes horrible, but I bought it from someone I went to high school with, so i’m sure it works.” If you haven’t been there, you know probably know someone who has said that.

I don’t think it has to be like that.

I want to be able to work out, get in shape, and enjoy an amazing beer with my wife or my friends and not feel bad about it. It can be done, and that’s why I’m here. I want to talk about training and beer and how we can enjoy both. Yeah, it might take longer my way to get your results, but the longer it takes, the more likely it is to stick.

One more thing!

One thing I want to add is that i’m going to talk about craft beer because I like it and it’s my website, but it doesn’t have to be beer for you. It could be wine, whisky, or even cupcakes and ice cream. Truth is I don’t want beer all the time. Sometimes…okay, a lot of times, I want ice cream, or BBQ, but the idea is the same. If we plan ahead and train smart, we can find a great balance. We can lift heavy things, run the race, lose the fat, build the muscle and then go celebrate our accomplishments with a great craft beer! (Or ice cream.)

It’s not always beer that you can balance with.

About me

My name is Garson Skelton. I’m a Certified Strength and Conditioning Coach, and a Certified Beer Server. I’m from the Houston area, but now live in Central Texas.

I’ve been lucky enough to work with and train a wide variety of people and athletes. From division 1 athletes and future NBA players, to a mom of 3 who was looking to get her figure back, and just about everyone in between. (Including elementary PE and a 60 year old woman with a knee replacement.)

Fortunately, while working as a strength and conditioning coach and a personal trainer I’ve also been able to travel and experience a lot of great beers from breweries all over. In fact, when I travel I always try to drink a beer I’ve never had before.

I have an amazing wife, who took this picture of me drinking at one of my favorite breweries, Innis and Gunn, on our honeymoon in Scotland

There are not many types of beer that I don’t like. Stouts and Scotch ales are some of my favorites. I have also really grown to love IPAs lately.

I can’t wait to share some of the things I’ve learned about training and nutrition over the years, and I can’t wait to talk about beer with you! Cheers!
